The Hooded Beach Towel

One of the best inventions/designs ever!

We all know how popular the hooded beach towel has become in recent years and deservedly so!  It is so easy for the kids to snuggle and get dry with but what happens when, as the kiddies inevitably start growing, the good ol’ hoodie towel barely covers their legs (and that’s even if their head still fits in the hood to get it on in the first place!)?

Here is a simple and oh-so-easy solution-  Add a hood to an ordinary rectangular beach towel!

Here is how:

Step 1:

Cut 2 pieces of towelling into rectangles.  I  cut mine 12 x 13 1/2” which is a generous size.  I used scraps of a cheap towel that I had left over from another project.  I purposefully used the ends of the towel as the side that will frame the face so I didn’t have to finish them later 😉

Step 2:

Round the top edges of the hood for a nicer finished shape.

Step 3:

Stitch and overlock/serge/zigzag the two pieces together around the hood top of the hood to the back.

Step 4:

Open the hood and overlock/zigzag/serge the raw seam at the bottom of the hood.  If you have a raw seam for the ‘face frame’ of the hood now is the time to finish this edge with your desired look- overlock, fold and sew, bias binding etc.

Step 5:

With right sides together, sew the bottom of the hood to the centre of the long side of the beach towel.

The results: One happy big kid!
